I wanted to be a farmers wife.
Now at nearly seventy I get cross when I remember my parents always said " oh! our Val she wants to be a farmers wife"
Now I realise I would have hated that, I wanted in truth to be a farmer, but that option was never given to me.
What do farmers wives do but bake and feed the farm workers and the tired husband coming in from the fields, not me at all.
Two stereotypes making me accept marriage and looking after a man my duty and place in life. Thank heavens things have changed and girls can happily say I want to be a farmer and I may have a partner but may not get married and even if I do my partner may be another girl.
How attitudes have changed in my life time.
Yesterday having to go out in the sun in long grass I needed jeans and wellingtons protecting against ticks whilst I repaired fencing in a new donkey field. I remembered my childhood dream and was grateful I ended up a bookseller with a husband who likes cooking.
