"If you like your "Entrecote" you'll love Bistro Regent Grill" so runs the poster for the chain of grills in Toulouse. There are now 24 Bistro Regents around the region, but also 4 restaurants called "L'Entrecote", the original in Toulouse, in Boulevard de Strasbourg, the others in major provincial cities.
L'Entrecote was opened in 1962 and with 49 employees and a turnover of 6 million euros is a well known Toulouse establishment. They claim that newcomer Bistro Regent has deliberately opened opposite them, copied their famous steak sauce and used their name in the advert quoted above and are suing for almost 1 million euros.
The owners of Bistro Regent claim the "entrecote" is simply a type of steak available in almost any restaurant in France and no one place can claim it as their copyright.
The Tribunal de Commerce of Bordeaux will give its decision in October.
