Aimed at slightly older children are the "Petit Nicolas" books, of which we have several, some in French, some in English.  Whilst being equally addictive, they contain a lot of family dialogue, which helps in communicating with French friends.  Also, the vocabulary is quite everyday, providing ways to say things that we all need.
Here's a useful phrase for tomorrow : "il s'avère que..." - it turns out that  (as in: I went to the shop but it turns out that it's closed all day).
