A point worth knowing

Hi Val
Louise's comments underline a real problem in using UK credit/debit cards in automated card reading fuel stations in France.  They will initially ask for authorisation for a maximum limit corresponding to an amount they think a client will want to tank.  Typically Leclerc in Villefranche will seek authorisation for €148 from a UK card issuer.  This will happen immediately.  You can then purchase a lower amount which will eventually be charged to your account.  However there is a built in delay between authorisation and payment - HSBC say this can take up to 15 days.  The problem is that with, for an example, a €20 purchase at Leclerc, €128 would remain blocked in your account for up to these 15 days.

Val says thank heavens we no longer use UK cards, unless in the UK. We did not know this Hugh.
