Holiday house scam

Hi Val
Not quite a French story but following on from your earlier post....
One Saturday evening a few summer’s ago we were sitting in our local pub garden with some neighbours when they had a phone call from the renters who had just arrived at their holiday villa in Spain.
Somebody else was already there having arrived a bit earlier and been let in by the local Spanish couple who looked after the house.
It turned out that their advert on a holiday rentals website had been cloned, the other people had made a booking and paid in full to criminals in Spain.  It was unfortunate for the genuine renters that the scammed ones arrived first and as the house keepers were expecting someone, they let them in.
Our friend had to go to enormous expense, flying out to Spain and renting another property for the genuine people to honour his contract.
Eventually (or incredibly) the Spanish police tracked down the criminals but it is another example of how the internet has opened up new criminal possibilities.
 All the best
 John
