A French rider, Blel Kadri, won the 8th stage of the Tour de France, in a mountain stage dominated by "grimpers" (climbers). The stage winners did not however make any real inroads into the general classification, where long time leader the Italian Vincenzo Nibali increased his lead over all rivals except Alberto Contador, who shaved 3 seconds from the Italian's 2 minute lead.
