The Burgundy wine grower, Emmanuel Giboulet, who was prosecuted for refusing to obey a prefectorial decree to spray his vines against a possible pest infection has been fined 1000 euros, 500 suspended. M. Giboulet, who is an organic producer, said he was not opposed to spraying if the pest was in his area, but it was not and the preventive treatment he felt was unnecessary. His cause was championed by environmentalist groups and an on-line petition signed by over 250000 sympathisers (including Tag editor and sub).
Giboulet faced a fine of 30000 euros and 6 months prison.
