Passport renewal

Hi Val
When you renew a UK passport, the new one will start from the date it is issued. Airlines often don't let you fly with less than 6 months left on your passport, so, to be on the safe side, people tend to renew early and forego several months of validity on their old passport.

But did you know - the UK Passport Office sent me this gem the other day in response to a question - that if you send off your application within 9 months of the renewal date, they will add the unexpired period to your new passport's validity if you simply enclose a letter saying you would like this to happen. Otherwise they don't think to do it.

Seemingly they only tell you of this facility if you ask - so you have to know about such things in order to find out about them! A bit like bank loans - they're only really available to people prosperous enough not to need to borrow!
