News of Lafarge

Lafarge were the cement makers at Lexos in the commune of Varen.
Almost 20 years ago the company pulled out of production and closed the business in the area. Many people lost jobs and it deeply affected the resources that Varen  council had to spend.
It also made more houses available as workers moved away to find jobs, our old Presbytere was owned by a manager and a secretary who had worked all their lives there. The couple moved to the coast at Bezier, he had a chest complaint after years working close to the cement.
Our neighbour when we lived in the Presbytere told us that Varen was always covered in a layer of grey dust which blew up to St. Vincent when the wind was in that direction.
The news this week end is that Lafarge are merging with a Swiss company Holcim to become the largest cement maker in the world.
Am I glad that they are still not at Lexos.
