In my head I was making up the next posts about diligent parents or lack of them, nature versus nurture, would our kestrel chicks grow up ( if they were lucky) and treat their chicks in this cavalier fashion. Then this afternoon I went for two swims in the pool which has a view down the field to some trees edging the property. The first time I noticed the kestrels kept flying in to one of the trees and then off, then back, then off. The second swim I could see quite clearly that the kestrels were feeding possibly two baby birds. So last night when the cat was attacked there is an even chance two had left the nest and the mother bird was chasing the cat away. There still remain three birds in the nest who are desperate for more food but looking at the size of them they will be out tomorrow. One of the parents has just been again to feed the three remaining.
Val says again both Malc and I have seen the two babies already out ( it has to be a sighting by us both to be confirmed) There are 3 still in the nest but not for much longer.
