Letter from Cape Breton

Good day Dear Val:
More bear news from yesterday. About 10h00 Maggie and I set out for Mabou Gardens, a nursery in a nearby community, to attend a clearance sale of perennials As we turned from our driveway to the road Mr. Bear hopped onto the pavement in front of us. He proceeded across and entered the woods where he became invisible! This is not the first time I have experienced this ability to blend in so well that you can't see this very large animal. Most unsettling I assure you. The trip to the nursery produced no perennials, but 2 lovely fuchsias which the hummingbirds love.
I had a small skin cancer removed from my right ear Thursday and it is healing well. It has me rather shut-in for a few days to protect from dirt and the ever present mosquitoes and deer flies.  We enjoyed a first feed of sugar snap peas from the garden on Saturday and have decided to plant our potatoes since it has dried up a lot. With the hot days ahead, we should get a harvest as long as there is no late August frost which is a rare, but not unheard of event here.
Summer is village festival season here, just like in France. This past week was Scotsville Ceilidh Days with a pub night and 2 woman show written by a local playwright Thursday, Ham and Marragh supper Friday with a square dance in the evening, parade and games day at the fire hall Saturday, and a pork chop supper Tuesday for the benefit of the United Church. Good food and good fun for all. There are events like that every week all over the Island and a square dance nearly every night in one hall or another. The last weekend in July is the Inverness Gathering and the Broad Cove Concert which is the premier event of the season for the last 40 years or more. Scottish musicians from all over the world vie to be invited to play there, but it always showcases the best of up and coming local talent.
Next Saturday we are at the wedding, supper, and reception of our best friend's 3rd child. They have been over the moon that AT LAST, one of their children is being married! Gwen was always the sensible child and although the sibs are lovely people, they don't slow down long enough to get caught it seems. Their son, Max, is a world champion para-sailor and competes all over the world.
That about wraps up all the news that's fit to print for this week. Hope you all are having a swell summer as we are. The nest picture I took from our front porch with a telephoto lens. The nest has not been occupied for some time now. They either missed this year, or it all took place while we were away. There are still lots of eagles around. My friend Bob took the pictures of the eagle while kayaking at our shore just this week.

Val says If the bear could hid away so easily perhaps that explains the bear Viviane evading capture for so long. This is certainly quite a different life to the one you spend in France, Bill. Thank you
