Monument aux morts ceremony today

Perhaps you went today in your town and villages to commemorate the end of the Second World War, a day we used to call VE day (Victory in Europe)
We in Varen went to the Monument aux Morts along with our French compatriots. A goodly number of expats turned up thanks to the efforts of Marcia Scott. Then after the touching ceremony, ending up with a tape recorder thumping out "Le Marseillaise", we were all invited to a drink at Le  Moulin (which is doubling as the bar at the moment) by M. le Maire.
Interesting that the group there are all the elderly of the village including us. The young French people I talked to beforehand asked me who went now, was it just the elderly? shame the young do not go.
Just noticed the caption,  Gareth Brown  was the chap who took the photograph, not the one laying the wreath.
A reader has asked what the Mayor said.
He thanked the involvement of all the other troops of all nationalities.
