Most of us who have been to opticians here have noticed that specs are rather expensive compared to UK prices. The French equivalent of Which? (UFC Que Choisir?) has discovered that a large number of opticians will "adjust" the invoice when a client says it is too expensive for their complementaire, to inflate the price of the lenses, which are more generously reimbursed by the Social Security and reduce the cost of the frame. Generally this will bring the overall cost within the range of many mutuelle policies. They do this rather than suggest a cheaper frame or offer a discount. The average price of a pair of specs is 470 euros.
The government is preparing a bill to limit the reimbursement by the Sante and this could have the effect of making the practice even more widespread. and the cost of complementaires will continue to rise.
