Many of us will join our French neighbours tomorrow to commemorate the end of World War 2 in 1945 following the Nazi surrender, but today 7th May marks the 60th anniversary of the French surrender at Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam. The Vietminh are alleged to have suffered 10000 losses during the 2 month siege and their ultimate victory lead eventually to the end of French colonialism in Indo-China.
The many residents of Vietnamese origin in France points to that past and today in the far east the French influence is still in evidence, with apparently little resentment felt.
And at Castelsarrasin today, a ceremony of remembrance
C'est une cérémonie en grande pompe que tiendra, ce 7 mai, à la caserne Marescot, le chef de corps du 31e régiment du génie, Arnaud Le Gal, à l'occasion de la commémoration du soixantième anniversaire de la bataille de Diên Biên Phu. Une date d'importance pour l'histoire du régiment des sapeurs africains qui, sous le label du 31e bataillon de marche du génie (BMG) dont le 31e régiment du génie (RG) est l'héritier, avaient été rudement éprouvés durant cette bataille qui marqua la fin de la présence française dans le Nord de l'Indochine (l'actuel Nord Vietnam).
