"They paved paradise.."
...and put up a parking lot", the words of Joni Mitchell are echoing around Muret, near Toulouse where the local council wanted to tear down 71 centenarian plane trees in the town centre and build an underground car park. The place will be re-surfaced with some hard material which protestors claim would increase temperatures by about 5C in neighbouring properties. They suggest am alternative site, but the council still wants the underground option, but will preserve 49 trees. Studies are continuing. How many town centres have seen their environment ruined for car parks - but how otherwise to keep the towns alive in the threat of out-of -town shopping.
