No "beau geste" for the police

It has been forbidden for policemen (and presumably women) to have beards or tattoos since 1974, but now the Interior Minister has agreed that the agents can become a la mode like many of their contemporaries. However, tattoos must be approved by their commander, must have no connotations which might cause offence and may need to be covered up at certain times. Beards must be neat and trimmed: "no legionnaire beards will be allowed".
