It will be on ebay tonight!

Dear Val,

Right, how completely, utterly stupid is this ?  Ernst and I went to the dechetterie this morning to get rid of some accumulated junk.  Whilst we were there I spied in the ‘any ol’ iron’ container a fabulous galvanised grey bucket.  Excellent condition, not a scrap of rust and in my mind I already had it on the terrace with a hanging basket perched on top and flowers tumbling over the top.  I just love anything galvanised !  It was right at the edge of the bin so I just reached over and plucked it out thrilled to bits.  I asked someone nearby if I could take it and he said you have to ask the guy in charge.  Now, I could have just put it in the van and no-one would have been any the wiser but I went and found the guy in charge and asked if I could take the bucket.  “Absolutely non.  “Défendu” to take things out of the bins”.  I thought he was kidding so I laughed, then realised that his face hadn’t cracked.  He wasn’t joking !  In this Wimbledon period I replied with a John McEnroe “You cannot be serious !!”.  So I asked what would happen to it. “Recycled”.  But I  want to recycle it for a lovely life on our terrace (and if I’m honest, probably being peed on by the smaller dogs !!).  He would not give in, apparently if he let me take it “hundreds” of people would descend on Montcuq dechetterie to take things !!  I am totally choked to think of ‘my’ lovely bucket being crushed when I would have given him a good home.   Moaning about it to friends over coffee later they both said that their husbands had been refused when they wanted to take things – both being mechanical fiddlers and fixers.

Why, why, why ?  The stuff is going to be crushed, why deny a good life for something ?!  Anyway, I’m down but not dead, I checked for cctv and may well pay a visit later !!!!
