To breed or not?

Hi Val
To be sure Sally is totally correct in saying that ‘baddies’ are those who let their dogs wander around, not sterilised and producing ad infinitum which results in the huge problem of too many unwanted dogs. These people are ignorant, what is her excuse ?  Why does she want to add to the problem by breeding more dogs and possibly deaf ones at that ? I am sure that Sally is a very responsible person and does a great job in following up her pups and taking them back if there is a problem ( what happens to them then ?).  But why not just let her dog live a peaceful happy life ? What I cannot get my head round is why people want  to use their dogs as ‘cash cows’.  I am sure that Sally’s bitches are treated extremely kindly which is, as we know, so not the case everywhere, but if she loves her dogs, why put them through ‘motherhood’  and, as an intelligent person, add to the over population of dogs. For every one of her puppies homed there is a place lost to a sad needy dog
The huge ‘baddies’ are the breeders with several breeds, I know of several in the area where the dogs are kept in dreadful conditions and it is the devil’s own job to change things.  There is one not ten minutes from here who breeds Bouviers amongst others and the care was so disgusting there were some found to weigh 25 kilos ( a healthy one should weigh about 40).  Puppy Farms, an absolute disgrace.  Sally refers to the history of many of our abandoned dogs and I can assure her that some of them come from breeders who cannot home the dogs they produce.
Sally breeds Dalmations, a dog very in fashion a few years ago but now not easy to home because of their ‘daft as a brush’ reputation. Now it is the turn of Australian Shepherds, beautiful dogs with unusual colouring but “oh dear” they need a LOT of training and education, they don’t stay pretty little pups so there are very many now in refuges.  We can see from the over inbreeding of some dogs such as Shih Tzu’s and Pugs (the current fad) malformation occurs.  The latter breeds have such flat noses that breathing problems are evident and I know one vet who will not operate on them because of the danger of the anesthetic to the poor dog.  Look at German Shepherds, hip problems because of over/inter breeding, Sharpeis who can hardly see, all because greedy stupid humans want to make money and create a certain shape.People have said to me they want to breed from their dog because “oh she is so lovely and has  a lovely character it would be a shame not to”, well, durrh, as in humans, a lovely mother does not necessarily produce a lovely offspring !
I could go on, but Sally and I will never agree.  If people want money they should get a job and not make dog ( s ) do it for them.
