Food and wine: part of the French culture


 English, French, Polish and Dutch in conversation
This morning's cafe et conversation at the Moulin de Druihet, between Varen and Verfeil, attracted an enthusiastic group of French, Dutch and English from as far away as St Antonin. With a mouth-watering choice  of cakes and biscuits and coffee and tea flowing freely, conversations, all in French of course, often turned to food and drink. Recipes ranged from genuine couscous (Algerian façon) to Yorkshire pudding, to Dutch style ham and eggs for breakfast. A Polish lady recommended porridge as a stomach liner and it transpired that there is no French equivalent, but after much discussion it was decided that bruet is the nearest equivalent ("broth" perhaps?), but that it was a rather outmoded foodstuff.
Malc remarked that certain people had no attachement to France, to be gently reminded that one can have attachements to people, but attaches to places. We are certainly forming both these types of attachments through these cordial and informal get-togethers.We were 18 in number and what a mix of nationalities there were.
Next month will be in the village of Varen - exact time and place to be announced.
