Who is being protected?

There have been plenty of articles in Taglines about the use of pesticides in agriculture. The Chamber of Agriculture for T&G has hit back saying that fruit growers in particular (fruit being a very important industry in the department) are fed up with being stigmatised as public poisoners by state funded "bobos ecolos"* and burdened with ever more stringent regulations which apply only in France.
Given that the supermarkets are also squeezing margins and there is increasing fraud with fruit from Spain being labelled as "French produce" the consumers are being duped and jobs are at risk.
It seems that the debate about environment versus employment versus profit continues and Taglines is quite happy to be classed as a "bobo ecolo" if it leads to a safer environment. The questions of Spanish fruit and fraud are for the government to deal with.
* "bobo" - pejorative term for "bourgeois bohemian", écolo" - ecologist, ", ie someone who can afford organic fruit!
