From Selgues to the Somme

When attending the vernissage of David Clench's exhibition of war paintings in the church at Selgues, near Verfeil, we had an interesting conversation with a local resident who had brought a little bunch of wild blue cornflowers. These he explained were "bleuets". (Taglines covered the story of bleuets last November) and were a symbol of remembrance to the French soldiers in WWI much as British and Commonwealth soldiers adopted poppies.
Those watching the Tour de France these last couple of days may have noticed that the riders were wearing little blue badges and the roadsides were planted with cornflowers as the Tour passed through the Somme and followed the line of the Western Front.
