10am today is when students will be getting their Baccalaureat results. Similar to UK A-level GCSE the Bac opens up the possibility to university or professional study. Students who do particularly well may get a "mention" along the lines of "good work" which is like a distinction in UK exams.
Those who fail may take a re-sit or take the whole year again. The local education authorities are obliged to find a place in a lycee and such candidates may opt to keep any "notes" of more than 10/20 - French exams tend to give marks out of 20.
We have met many young students this last year, most not yet at Bac age, but for those who are, fingers crossed.
