We gathered round the big screen to watch the final of Euro 2016, English, French, Pakistani and Afghans. Of those present pretty well the only football fan was Malc, the French girl there to support France from loyalty, the boys who knew little or nothing of football, but knew of Ronaldo, the Portuguese super star.
In truth the match was pretty dull, and by the time 115 minutes had passed by without any real excitement, the injury to Ronaldo after 20 minutes excepted, we were all hoping that a penalty shoot-out would enliven things. Then that Portugal goal - disappointment for us supporting France, compensation for the Ronaldo fans.
A French win would have been a boost to the nation's self confidence; a defeat no doubt the fault of President Hollande.
