What is Dixieland jazz?

For those coming, or thinking of coming to the Picnic in the Park at Domaine de Sautou tonight, the musicians of Martins Jazz Band have sent an explanation of the origins of the music that excites them - and will entertain us.

Hello everybody and welcome to Sautou with Via Sahel, the Tag-on-line and the MJB

We, the Martin's Jazz Band , are playing music called Dixieland music. The French men call this music: New Orléans style.
In a way, it's not wrong : New Orleans remains the "cradle " of jazz as one tells continuously when setting and listening to  TSF Jazz New Orleans on your computer.
What to know about ?
1. Historically , the style comes from New Orleans , born in a very musical ambiance, Bach, European migrants, old plantations, Caribbean, ragtime, gospel, chorch, vaudou...  but it was launched, and famous latter, in Chicago with the support of prohibition after the closing of Storyville, dangerous suburb of the French Quarter of New Orleans.
2. The most important goal of a band was to move by foot or on a float, march, parade, ceremony  and so on ....it explains the rhythmic section is compounded with instruments easy for transportation :a Souba (17 kg) , a banjo and ...for the drums the famous wash board (one spare part of the former washing machine of the old good times : afro-american woman and board) . The melodic section remains classical : clarinet, trumpet and trombone, the last player sitting on the back of the float.... indeed.
3. The name of Dixieland comes from the history  : the bank of Louisiana by 1917 printed the ten dollar banknote for the full state in both languages : dix and ten, but, as you know, at least better than me, the English speaking pronounced "Dix" as Dixie. So Louisiana became the Dixieland a little bit like Tagland .. .
4. The music is built in a very academic way : Four beats with accent on the weak beats ( 2 and 4) and 32 bars and about 7/8 keys depending of the Baudouin book, the bible of Jazz : one piece meets one key only. After playing  the musical theme, the musicians improvise on the chords of the theme in solo or even  all to-gether  which is a feature of the style.

If you want to know more : come to the picnic in Sautou (closed Castanet and Najac) the place to be today.

Best regards
