Pamela Anderson, former model, Playmate and TV star of "Baywatch" caused a stir in the Assembly yesterday when, at the invitation of Green parliamentarian Laurence Abeille, she appeared in support of a proposition to outlaw "gavage", the force feeding of geese and ducks in the production of foie gras.
The resulting media scrum elicited the defenders of the practice to denounce an unworthy publicity stunt.
The Depeche du Midi, made its stance clear, talking of Ms Anderson's attack on "our ducks" and not too veiled references to her rather unintellectual past and undoubted charms ("tour de poitrine d'un metre!!") as disqualifications in the debate. Producers decried this attack on their livelihood, putting the welfare of geese ahead of their concerns when bird flu has had a serious effect on their flocks.
One said that Ms Abeille obviously preferred "turkey stuffed with silicon" to honest geese stuffed with local maize. Whether the MP and the star thought their coup de pub worthwhile is not known, but it certainly hit the headlines, if just to allow a lot of sniggering political incorrectness.
