The wrong way on the autoroute

A62 : 28 km à contresens entre Toulouse et Montauban

An elderly man in his eighties on his way home from Toulouse to Montauban drove 24 kms the wrong way on the autoroute till eventually pulled over by the gendarmes. So fortunate there was not a serious accident, although some poor person did run into the side barrier.
This to me raises some serious issues which most of us elderly drivers need to think about?
Are we safe on the roads?
So easy to say as I do, I have driven for years with out an accident, not taking into consideration our changes in eye sight our  our mental and physical changes.
I wa shocked last year when having an eye test in the UK to be told my  with my eye sight I would not have passed the sight requirement test.  I said " but I have always had perfect eye sight" Everyone says that apparently.

I hear elderly friends saying  just that same thing now and refusing to be bothered getting their eyes tested.
They are a danger not only to themselves but to other drivers on the road.

My stepfather with alzheimers and parkinson's in his eighties was still driving and refused to give up even after numerous small accidents. The final straw was running in to the Doctors car when going in for a medical check up. Unbeknowns to him my sister had mentioned his driving to the Doctor and there was relief all round when his licence was taken off him.
The sooner eye tests and mental agility tests comes in to force for elderly drivers the safer people will be on the roads. I bet some readers do not like this and it is certainly not aimed at any one person but to me is common sense ( some of us never had it or have lost it with years)
You can of course if you lose your licence have a "sans permis " for getting around.
