This is how the story could have been written

Two prisoners escaped from the prison at Foix it was reported in the Depeche. They climbed the wall and then it read a bit like a film, a horse was waiting below covered with a mattress and as I imagined they jumped on to it and off in to the blue.
I read  "'un matelas posé à cheval"
Before proceeding further I asked Malc if I was on the right track to be laughingly told there was no horse: the mattress was " posed" on the wall, which presumably has glass or barbed wire.
Back to the drawing board on my French. No horses were hurt in the making of this escape!!
One man has been caught the other... well still "en cavale": riding his horse around somewhere.
