In fact the French expression "coiffé au poteau" refers beheading, an extreme version of short back and sides.

I should have said: coiffé, putting up or arranging the hair, just before beheading, was done to ensure a clean cut. I have no idea how it came to have a sporting sense, but it is widely used. Christopher
