Promenade de l'anglais

The famous Nice street Promenade des Anglais has lent its name to the Cannes film festival, opening yesterday because of the incidence of English language films being presented this year.
Not just Hollywood but independents from other countries have chosen English as the lingua franca in the hope of wider distribution. The competition opened, however, with a French film "La tete haute", starring guess who, Catherine Deneuve.
The jury is presided by the Coen brothers, lending another anglophone dimension, and tonight one can see "Mad Max: Fury Road" being shown hors competition for its nationwide release. It will be on at Le Querlys tonight. OK if you like that sort of thing - crashes, explosions, fights, fantastic costumes - pretty much everyday life..
