Internet broadband speed

Hi Val,
I just saw the messages about broadband speed. Just some explanations about what is happening.
First of all the speed you get via ADSL or VDSL is depending on the state of the telephone exchange and of the length of the telephone cable from your house to the telephone exchange.
Starting with the length of the cable: after 7 km distance it really gets difficult to get ADSL. You can check this on http://www.eligibilite-adsl.com/ by typing in your telephone number (or the number of a nearby neighbour).
In this region we have very sophisticated but also sometimes very old telephone exchanges. Some run on ADSL (up to 2 Mbps download), ADSL2+ (up to 24 Mbps) or even now on VDSL (up to about 95 Mbps). Saint Antonin for instance has now VDSL all over town since a few weeks. But as I mentioned before, the speed goes down when the cable is longer.
When ADSL or VDSL aren’t available or giving a poor result, there are the possibilities for Wimax or Kiwi (in the Aveyron, Tarn and parts of Tarn et Garonne), although I also hear of low speeds and failures of it many times. Then the other possibility is setting up a satellite connection, of which I would recommend Sat2Way and Nordnet with their KSAT broadband connection up to 22 Mbps. Prices are all comparable.

If you need more information just pass by in my VIDEPC shop (opposite to the Gazpacho) in St Antonin on a Sunday morning and I’ll give you free advice!
