English actress Helen Mirren has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress her performance in Lasse Hallström's The Hundred-Foot Journey. The film — which is based on the book of the same name by Richard C. Morais — opened in August. In it, Mirren plays a restaurateur who protests the opening of a potentially competing restaurant 100 feet from her establishment's front door.
Mirren's character Madame Mallory owns a Michelin-starred restaurant in the South of France. When a family from India are displaced to the same town, they decide to open an Indian restaurant. Madame Mallory is not pleased. The ensuing culture clashes and a forbidden romance provide the drama and comedic relief that keep the film from turning into a simple exercise in food porn. Early reviews praised the food shots as "screen siren glamorous." Val says I think we all have seen the film giving very mixed reviews. What do you think, wonderful though she is, was it " Golden Globe" material?
