Hidden gems

Dear Val

Last night we went to the tiny Templar Chapel at St Paul de Marmiac near Penne. It has been fully restored since the ceiling collapsed about 8 years ago and is now a beautiful place with amazing stone wall carvings and lovely statues and paintings. The stone corbels which originally supported the roof have now imaginatively been used as the supporters for the uplighters which shine on the old oak roof beams. No attempt has been made to replace the ceiling.

But the inside of the church was not the only hidden gem we discovered as we had gone to hear two young men playing what they described as eclectic jazz on saxophone and accordion. It was fantastic in what turned out to be a building with the wonderful acoustics.

There are two further concerts coming up both starting at 9.00pm. Wednesday 23rd July is Celtic fairy stories and Harp Music and Wednesday 30th is an evening of traditional music as well as occitan and gascon dance music.  The price is a donation into a hat firmly proffered as you leave and a buvette offers wine or soft drinks as well. If either event turns out to be as good as last night anyone who goes will be in for a treat
