The newest concept in shopping in Bordeaux in "La Recharge". Two young graduates (one in economics and one in energy policy) were taken with organic groceries and thought that a shop offering such produce with "zero packaging" would be a popular move. So far their expectations have been overwhelmed. Although it sounds like the "Home and Colonial Stores" (remember them?) with open packages of coffee, flour, biscuits etc, plus local vegetables and fruit the idea of bringing your own bags and bottles and jars to be filled by weight is proving popular.
The idea has been revived in London and New York and the young entrepreneurs hope it will catch on here too. Look out for a chain of "recharges".
