To Celia & Peter,
I know you had your reasons for having Happy rehomed and I know that to you they were perfectly logical reasons. I don't know you, I don't know your circumstances but please, please, please, just leave it at that now, please don't bring another dog into your household.
Your Grandchildren, who by your own admission have never had a dog and don't understand them, do not need a puppy to grow up with. Puppies are cute and cuddly but they are also really hard work, they need constant attention in their early months and years to shape them into well behaved, sociable members of the family and small children generally do not offer the structure that is needed for that.
Your border Collie does not need a playmate, it will be perfectly fine with your family as it's Pack.
Lastly, for all the people that helped you rehome Happy and for Happy himself, don't let all the heartache have been in vain.Mimi
