quite a day today..but we must start with a massive thankyou to all the tag readers who are once again being so very generous, because of your kindness we can carry on achieving...
On arrival this morning we couldn't find either of the Afghan families we wanted to build shelters for, they had disappeared into the "Jungle" (as it's called here) so instead we headed to the Eritrean side of the site & were once again humbled by the kindness we were shown by people who have nothing.
This is a salutory story from the day - We left a Turkish man "Atesh" guarding our timber pile ( everything has to be watched, too many with nothing) It transpires that Atesh (who's in his 60's) had lived in England for many years & all his family is there, he went home to Turkey to see his mother & had all his id stolen, he started walking to England via Hungary where he said the streets were full of people sleeping rough & food was thrown to him as if he was a dog, eventually he arrived in Calais & is now stuck in "The Jungle" as the British govt will not let him home & will not listen to his story, he still has his British driving license & social security number but no proof that they are his - this is just horrifying isn't it, once again we can see how terrible things can happen to anyone.
Tomorrow our priority goes to a man & his 2 year old daughter who are currently living in a leaking tent no more than 6 ft from a knee deep quagmire surrounded by rubbish. Where the mother of his child is we do not know, he is an Afghan & speaks virtually no other language at all but his smile at the word house said it all.
