Boxing Day, what does that mean?

The big downside of Christmas in France is obviously the absence of Boxing Day, but then the French don't generally need a second day off to recover from a christmas pudding induced hangover.
And they do make up for it in other ways with their festive season stretching out over weeks rather than 48 hours.
Val says- thanks Glynis for the Christmas pudding which was much appreciated and no hangovers from that... the champagne is a different story!
How often to French friends ask about the meaning of boxing day? and how often do we come up with unsatisfactory answers.
Boxing Day is traditionally the day following Christmas Day, when servants andtradesmen would receive gifts, known as a "Christmas box", from their bosses or employers. Today, Boxing Day is the bank holiday that generally takes place on 26 December. It is observed in the United KingdomCanadaHong KongAustraliaNew ZealandSouth Africa and some other Commonwealth nations.
