Rugosa roses

I wonder if the "couvre sol rosier" your correspondent mentions are the same as the Rugosa roses (R.rugosa) we planted a few years ago.

We had a bare bank of poorly drained soil, steep enough to make us worry about possible slippage, but where we had to avoid growing things which animals shouldn't graze on.  A friend was thinning her rugosa roses, and we planted about 200 cuttings - at least half survived and have done quite well.

The flowers have a good scent - in fact they're used for making pot pourri in China.
