Many employees took Friday off to "faire the pont" between the official holiday on Thursday and the weekend. Some education authorities refused to allow school staff, including teachers, to take the time off this year, as has been the habit in previous years. So unions called a strike causing some schools to close anyway. Those schools which did open found, however, that many pupils had decided to stay at home anyway. Stalemate.
