Poor maintenance blamed for rail crash

The rail crash at Bretigny-sur-Orge, outside Paris just 12 months ago, in which 7 people died and many more were injured was the result of poor maintenance by SNCF. The piece of track which separated when a "fish plate" worked loose had been recently checked and the more than 200 faults the accident inspectors found were largely known to the rail operator. The Minister of Transport said that the rail infrastructure had become "extremely rundown", but that steps had been taken to address safety issues.
