Feelings of insecurity are prevalent in French people's concerns, especially in cities. All the political parties promise to do something to about it, especially the Front National (though they blame it on immigrants mainly).
So a group of enterprising young members, including the local vice-president, decided to whip up fear among the population by burning cars and making false reports of agressions. They then used their political position to denounce "growing insecurity".
Yesterday the court in Meaux condemned the leader to 3 years in prison "ferme" (ie behind bars), with lesser sentences for four other accomplices.
Another example of right wing supporters using scare tactics to spread fear and hatred. Many of the anti-migrant or anti-Muslim stories making the rounds on social media (or even mainstream press) such as the "just you wait, there are 4000 jihadists among the migrants", are simply made up by ultra right groups and "shared" as the apparent truth.
