Fire in the Pyrenees

A forest fire covering over 100 hectares broke out last night near the border town of Cerbere (Pyrenees Orientales). Hundreds of pompiers are battling the flames whipped up by the tramontane wind. The main roads into the town are blocked and smoke can be seen for miles.
The local maire says no homes are threatened at present and there have been no injuries, but he is convinced that the fire was started deliberately.
Readers going into Spain via the Perpignan route may notice increased activity around the border crossing.

Edit: later reports say a woman volunteer pompier was killed carrying out her duties.
