A Scruples question

In the summer we played a game called Scruples with the girls and their mum and dad. We had to sort through the cards and take out some of the unsuitable " sex" questions but one of the questions that came up was:
If you found a large note of money would you pocket it or take it to the police station.

Our youngest spent hours ruminating on this one. How would you know the person claiming it actually lost it, and what if they had left the country and went to  ... Australia? She obviously at 8, struggled with  the concept of handing it in.
Anyway what should happen today as we walked along the river bank in Laguepie but I found a large note. I stood looking at it and said to Malc, "we have the "Scruples" question."
Anyway this is where it gets interesting we took the money to the Mairie in the village and explained where it had been found. The lady looked gob smacked and said " nobody has ever handed in money before, cameras, watches, yes, but money never. "Why did you just not keep it she said? looking amazed still. Malc replied "but it is not ours"
She was convinced nobody would ever go in and claim it and so we left our details to contact and brought it home. If it is not claimed in a couple of weeks it will become a donation to refugees.

Hi Val
That brought back some memories.  As a child  I remember, whilst staying with my granny, I went to the local pet shop with my cousin - we used to help feed the animals there.  Just outside I found a 10shilling note (I know, hard to believe I'm that old!!). I took it to the police station and he took all my details, told me I was very honest, and in a month as no-one had claimed it, I got it back.

I'll be up in the morning with a lot of bags of items for the Calais Run.
