On the day commemorating the start of the bloodiest battle in the First World War, the Somme, in northern France, when tens of thousands of soldiers from all over Britain, the Commonwealth, France and Germany lost their lives or were seriously injured in just a few hours, it seems to belittle us to worry about political divisions in the UK.
These terrible wars in Europe (and we should not forget Bosnia and Kosovo) were the result of divisions between our peoples and the warped political ideas of racist demagogues - we had hoped that the peace we have enjoyed was one fruit of membership of a united Europe. How soon we forget.
RIP all those lads.
