Winter fuel payments

Dear Val & Malcolm,
We settled in France in October  of 1988 and were a source of much curiosity & concern to our neighbours.  The farmhouse had not been lived in for many a winter, the roofs leaked and quite a bit of flooring was either rotten or missing. A chilly winter loomed. Winter fuel payments were unheard of. A  thoughtful neighbour suggested we  follow his annual routine , as a hedger and ditcher he worked outside all year and  his house was  none too warm either.  The days had  only just past  when country folk slept cosily sandwiched  between the  hay in the loft  and the animals in the “cave” below.
His tried and tested method of conserving heat  was to smear body, arms and legs with a generous layer of goose grease.  Wrap all with strips of woollen cloth and leave this swaddling  in place until end of March at the earliest.
Not an expensive method I think and no need to unwrap.
Love, Sally C..
Val says  still does not help with ones sex life or lack of it.  No, the UK government have a lot to answer for!
