The Sevegnes are pleased with the link

Liliane and Yannick Sevegnes at the cinema Le Queryls in St. Antonin are two stars of St. Antonin although they are never centre stage themselves. I cannot think of any of us ex pats who did not appreciate the first rate service they give us. THANK YOU, BOTH OF YOU

When I started TAG all those years ago as a newspaper to hand out, my friend Jill Spearman interviewed the couple and this now ancient article appears below. As TAG has new readers everyday some of you will know the story, some of you will not.

Le Cinéma le Querlys – something to celebrate!

Once upon a time – well, in 1968, actually – a young man and a young woman met in St Antonin Noble Val and fell in love.  They held their engagement party in what is now the salle of the Querlys, and was then a restaurant.  They were Liliane and Yannick Sevegnes, and since 1984 they have been running the cinema that is one of St Antonin’s best assets.

Their project began in 1982, after a fire had destroyed the restaurant on the ground floor of the building, which then belonged to Liliane Sevegnes’ father.  The Sevegnes, then agricultural workers, had no practical experience of cinema at all, but a great love of film, and enormous enthusiasm and commitment.

A year’s training in projection at a cinema in Montauban; research and enquiries; encouragement from the Ministry of Culture (Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture, was keen to promote small local cinemas); a government advance (not a grant!); a mortgage on their house; the conversion of the ground floor of the building into a cinema (Liliane’s father was an electrician, and he did all the wiring); the development of links with distributors :- on May 16,1984 the Cinéma le Querlys opened its doors for the first time, showing a film by Georges Rouquier – Briqueferre.

Despite the scepticism of some fellow commerçants (who predicted they’d last 6 months), the cinema has flourished, the number of entrants rising steadily from 13,000 in 1984 to a current 18,500 per year.  ( this fiqure was 8 years ago)Yannick and Liliane show 80 films per year, and are proud that just over half are ‘Version Original’.  It’s been hard work convincing distributors that, in contrast to the usual French preference for dubbed films, the Querlys has a strong audience for ‘V.O.’  This is very much to do with the high proportion of British, Dutch and other non-French cinema-goers in the Querlys’ audience – they outnumber the French.

The Querlys is entirely self-sufficient, receiving no subsidy of any kind.  This gives Liliane and Yannick complete independence in their choice of films.   This independence, of course, is what gives their audience the benefit of easy access to varied, thoughtful, high quality programming, in a comfortable, welcoming venue.  And it is for the quality of the programming that the Querlys is classified ‘Art et .Essai’, attracting a merit award of 5,000 euros per year – the only money that doesn’t come from ticket sales.

Do they have any aspirations for the future?  Only that more people should come to the cinema – and also that other commerçants in St Antonin should recognise and take advantage of the opportunity that the success of the Querlys brings to them.  Most restaurants and bars close at the moment the Querlys’ audience is emerging, full of the film they’ve just seen, and ready to prolong the evening over a drink or a bowl of soup.

Through their cinema, Liliane and Yannick make an enormous contribution to the cultural life of this region – we are very fortunate to be the beneficiaries of their passion for the movies.

The Querlys programme comes out at the beginning of each month and are widely available throughout the region.
AND NOW YOU CAN GET THE  CINEMA PROGRAMME BY CLICKING ON THE LINK AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE
You will also see [when I can print enough] TAG business cards next to their leaflets in the cinema, so yet another way of promoting TAG

Hummingbird Hawk Moths

Dear Val,
Not strictly winter shots but felt they might brighten up the day.
Hummingbird Hawk-Moths, I recorded over a dozen at once of these day flying moths on some lavender bushes.
They have long proboscis which allows them to drink nectar from flowers that other insects cannot reach so avoiding competition.  It is also reported they return to the same flower beds at approximately the same time each day.   Using a fast shutter speed allowed me to freeze the action of their wing movement, quite tricky as they move so quickly from flower to flower.
Val says,  to see more of Neville's photos go to Wild Photos

Walkers in the country should sign this.

Dear Val,
This petition asks the government to implement stricter safety rules for hunters who cause many accidents, harming and often killing people.
All of us who walk dogs in the countryside should sign this.
Please would you post it on Tag?
Thanks, Charlotte.
charlotte,

Inspiring leaders in the area

Read the letter below to see how a reader has been inspired by visiting Jan Lemmy and her  donkeys. The donkeys saved from some dreadful situations, often with painful hooves never cut or injuries of neglect.
Sometimes in your life you meet people who want to change things and will work steadfastly to do something about it.
Malc and I have always supported various charities but have never before had a chance to see and meet two people who have disrupted their lives to help others, be it children or animals.
Jean Marie Nosal who runs the Domaine de Sautou is one of these people. Forty years ago he had a holiday in Mali and as he sat with friends eating in a restaurant,  street children where eating scraps thrown to them, left by the diners. He could not bear it so came back to France, took out a bank loan and started his school and then hospital in Bamako, and has been raising money ever since for street children of Africa.
Jan Lemmy is the same sort of inspiring character, she loves donkeys and cannot bear to see them suffer. Both she and her partner have jobs and she still manages to spend all her spare  time looking after the donkeys in her care. If there is a donkey in distress that she is told about she is into her car and off to see what she can do.
For all those people who have been to see the donkeys in their now happy home I know you have told me how you were touched by the experience.
Steve is obviously one of these people who have been affected  and if you too want to help start by coming into St.Antonin tomorrow and buying raffle tickets from me, I will be there , 11am at the Gazpacho. Come and introduce yourself as a TAG reader
Just as a thought to show how committed I am [and Malc thinks I should be] I will wear a TAG business card in my hair so you know who to buy your tickets from. I would hate to see any of you accosting strange women!
Malc says Why don't you just wear a badge like a normal person might!

Manuel Valls is riding high in the socialist party

In an interview with Spanish newspaper ABC, professional violinist Anne Gravoin was asked about the Ifop poll, reviewing the sex appeal of French politicians, which showed that 20 percent of women aged between 20 and 40 would happily have a “torrid affair” with Valls.
“Manuel absolutely deserves it – and a lot more besides,” she said. “A huge number of women want to sleep with my husband, the love of my life.”
“He’s a very lovable man,” she added.
Polls regularly show that Valls enjoys greater popularity than any other minister in France’s Socialist-led government.
Val says  - Strange things these French polls, I mean did they ask " would you like a torrid affair with Manuel Valls? " and I feel discriminated against if they only asked women between 20 and 40 , do you think after that age  your torrid affair capabilities are past it... mmm they could be right!

It is not often the Church rocks

L'Eglise de Varen shook last night, with a packed church and it did not end there. At well after eleven we  all moved out into the front street from the church to continue the singing, hand clapping and  arm waving.
The Basque choir "Indara," fourteen men of all ages came to Varen to sing their wonderful programme. It started at 9 pm and the evening went so well that the men just could not stop, and we did not want them to. If you get the chance to hear this group, do go, they were just great.

ANGLICAN CHURCH ~ HARVEST THANKSGIVING: Sunday 6th October, 11am, Eglise StEugène, Brens
Even though the harvest is late this year, our harvest thanksgiving will be held as usual on the first Sunday in October. Everyone is welcome. Once again we will be inviting our Catholic friends to join us for aperos after the service and then going to Elise and Robin Johnston’s house in Campagnac for a bring and share harvest lunch. Please remember once again to bring your own couvert.

Tyrax has a vide grenier Sunday, a quiz Monday and then says his goodbyes

Hi Val,
Hope you are well.
Sorry for the delay, filming is now finished here in the village.
My wife and I did one day as an extra, they needed me to be free till end of oct' for the cooking scenes but I already have flights to go abroad and I didn't know if it would just be a day.
The day we did was interesting, it was in the market. Henri and I were sitting in the cafe ordering drinks which was lucky as some people had to stand all day.
I am leaving next wed' and we're doing a 'vide grenier' at ours on Sunday which gives me an opportunity to say bye to people and then doing the last quiz next Monday which is the last quiz of the year and possibly ever.
Regards

Dear Val,

I wonder if you would kindly post up a reminder about the Parisot Literary Festival, an exciting event that will take place 11th-13th October – only a week away!

We have an excellent line-up of both French and British authors. The full programme is on our blog,www.festlitt.blogspot.com (in French and English).

However, we need to know numbers if you want to attend Céline Wagner’s workshop in French on Sat 12th Oct to learn how to write a French cartoon book (see contact details below).

Also, we still have a few places left for the dinner with the authors on Saturday 12th October at l’Auberge de La Castille in Parisot at 7.45 pm. There will be an aperitif beforehand at the Salle des Fêtes, Parisot, to which everyone is welcome, at 7.00 pm.

The meal is 20 euros, which includes three courses, wine and coffee. Places will be confirmed on receipt of payment. Booking is via:

He nearly set his trousers on fire

Be careful with your little batteries when taking them to the special rubbish bins. Malc had a clutch he was taking to the special battery disposal bin so he popped them into his pocket and then went to walk the dogs. As he was walking he started feeling heat on his leg and putting his hand in his pocket nearly burnt his fingers, one battery must have contacted with another and was red hot. I was a bit disappointed when he told me as I thought had his trousers burnt it would make a better news story !
Does that seem a bit heartless!

Sad death of St. Antonin resident

Well known Francoise Tinayre- Blum has sadly died. On a visit to her sister who lives near Limoges, Francoise age 83 had a very bad fall, leading to her death yesterday. Francoise was well known in many English and French groups in St. Antonin; part French and  English,  Francoise worked to integrate both groups in the town and particularly enjoyed the local history groups and in recent years was an active member of the ladies group Fifi.
Her daughter of whom she was very proud was often a prize winning gardener at Chelsea, creating gardening displays for the Royal Family. Our condolences go to all the family.

Things do not always go to plan!

There we all were settled in our seats for the first film of the Cinema club season, Argo, when we realised the DVD brought along by one of the members was a blue ray and not compatible to our equipment. Sarah quickly produced another DVD which she had brought along for another evening and instead we watched in French with English subtitles "La Reine Margot". Strangely at the end all the ladies really enjoyed it and the principal actor  Vincent Perez was much admired with or without clothes. The men generally were more lukewarm about it, apart from two who hated it, one keeping his eyes closed through sex and bloody fighting scenes. The next evening  will be the 17th of Oct. and I will try and get Argo .. again

Val has run the excellent plant swap event at Mas del Sol for the last few years, which has been really popular, and we’re hosting it this year. The Fifi gardening club have decided that just one event in the spring isn’t enough, so we’re adding in an autumn one too, just in time for a bit of seasonal planting.
Come along with your spare plants and seeds and find yourselves some fantastic new ones, FOR FREE! John will be on hand to talk to you about any plant or gardening issues and there will also be a selection of our alpine and perennial plants for sale. Terri Tippet can’t make it to this event, but has promised she’ll be joining us for the spring one. We’re hoping for good weather, but don’t be put off if it rains, as we’ll set up the plant tables in the barn.

Ryanair will appeal, trouble is they are not an appealing company.

A French court has ordered low-cost carrier Ryanair to pay €10 million in damages plus fines for breaching French labour laws at its operation in Marignane, near the southern port city of Marseille.
The airline has said it plans to appeal.
Ryanair faced multiple charges, including registering workers employed in France as Irish employees, preventing workplace councils from functioning and preventing staff from having free access to unions.
The case centres around a facility operated by the company at Marignane, where 127 Ryanair employees were based. The airline neglected to apply French labour laws to its Marignane-based staff or complete tax declarations for them.
Ryanair argued that Irish law applied to the employees, as it did not have a permanent base in the area and its staff took their orders from company headquarters in Dublin.
A lawyer for the SNPL pilots' union, Roland Rappaport, urged the court to "make an example" of Ryanair in its ruling.
"We are dealing with a company whose only goal is to counter the law in defiance of the interests of workers," the prosecution said.
France 24
Val says Why do none of us have sympathy with this pushy Irishman  Michael O' Leary and the business he runs. Airbus has just won an award for the most appealing business in France. One cannot imagine Ryanair winning an award like this in any country they work in.

It may have been a sales call but...

That was so funny. I have just had a sales lady phoning from India speaking English  asking about our beautiful property... at this point I stopped her and said, Oh! no, you have got this all wrong, the property is terrible, the roof is falling in and none of the toilets work. She went into fits of uncontrollable giggling and apologised for wasting my time. Now I have just had an awful thought, what if it was a serious enquiry to rent the gite. For heavens sake do not tell Malcolm.

A new dolmen, the first for Villefranche de Rouergue

A dolmen, also known as a portal tomb, portal grave, or quoit, is a type of single-chambermegalithic tomb, usually consisting of three or more upright stones supporting a large flat horizontal capstone (table), although there are also more complex variants. Most date from the early Neolithic period (4000 to 3000 BC). Dolmens were usually covered with earth or smaller stones to form a barrow, though in many cases that covering has weathered away, leaving only the stone "skeleton" of the burial mound intact.
It remains unclear when, why, and by whom the earliest dolmens were made. The oldest known dolmens are in Western Europe, where they were set in place around 7000 years ago. Archaeologists still do not know who erected these dolmens, which makes it difficult to know why they did it. They are generally all regarded as tombs or burial chambers, despite the absence of clear evidence for this. Human remains, sometimes accompanied by artifacts, have been found in or close to them, which could be scientifically dated, but it has been impossible to prove that these archaeological remains date from the time when the stones were originally set in place.
Val says These photos of dolmens sent by Evelyn Jackson, reminded me that last week it was reported that the first ever dolmen has been found at Villefranche.
I have given a link to an article about the dolmens of Martiel

Let us recognise and pardon, those brave shell shocked soldiers

They were mostly young, rank-and-file soldiers, exhausted and shell-shocked after months of what was considered the world's must brutal war. One day they simply refused to take part in another raid that involved running out over the top of their trench, ignored orders or refused to get in line for inspection.
Shot by firing squad, often as an example in front of their fellow soldiers, these disgraced, so-called cowards – convicted by military tribunals of crimes such as desertion, disobedience or "abandoning their post in the presence of the enemy" – are now largely seen as traumatised victims of the horror of war. But they are not counted in the first world war memorials dotting France, nor are they considered to have died for their country.
The Socialist president François Hollande, who has promised that next year's first world war centenary commemorations will be one of the "great events" of his leadership, is under increasing pressure to restore the good name of hundreds of French soldiers executed by their own army during the war. But the rehabilitation of soldiers shot by firing squad remains one of the most sensitive and controversial memorial issues surrounding the 1914 Great War in France. A report handed to the ministry of veterans' affairs on Tuesday presents a number of options to Hollande, warning of the difficulty of either doing nothing or issuing a blanket pardon to everyone who was shot.

The donkeys are wagging their tails; they must be happy

Someone said that to Malcolm about our donkeys this morning,  but we knew it was because they were flicking flies away.
Dogs wag their tails when happy, cats wagging their tails means beware they are about to pounce and if our cat Max is wagging his tail, advice is to remove your hand quickly. Malc and I cannot think of any indication the donkeys give you of being happy. We know they like being brushed but they do not smile, or purr,  but they do cuddle in to you.

Young people and adolescents are at risk of sleep disorders, drowsiness during the day and of developing addictions to other psychoactive substances if they take drinks like Red Bull, Monster or Burn, according to a report published by France’s Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES).
Energy drinks were also dubbed dangerous for pregnant women, as they increase the risk of slowing fetal growth, and women who breastfeed. Also at risk are those with certain heart problems, or psychiatric or neurological disorders, such as epilepsy.
The report highlighted hundreds of cases of people who suffered from adverse reactions after consuming energy drinks; some 257 cases were reported, of which 212 could be analysed.

Diana, poster moved

The French distributor of the film "Diana" has removed a poster advertising the film from the site where Diana, Princess of Wales died in 1997.
The promotional poster for the film was originally placed at Place de l’Alma (near the entrance to the Pont de l'Alma tunnel) and sparked consternation in the British press.
Diana, Princess of Wales, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their driver were killed after their car smashed into a pillar in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel while being pursued by photographers, on August 31, 1997.

The poster was mere metres away from the landmark gold-leafed Flame of Liberty which has become an unofficial memorial to the late princess.

The Road Home

What a beautiful short film. It is not often I download things but I am glad I downloaded and watched this film for free. The photography and direction of the film are wonderful and the young actors confusion about his background is really touching. Check out the post below from Becky Brown of Mini Monde

Helen Mirren has been in town recently. She was here filming 'The Hundred-Foot Journey' a Dreamworks Studio production about an Indian family that moves to France to open an Indian restaurant, right opposite a Michelin starred restaurant owned by Helen Mirren. There's been quite a buzz about it in the area and many went and auditioned to be extras in the film. We tried but as we weren't yet registered to pay tax in France they wouldn't let us even hand in the form. They were filming in nearby St Antonin, a popular holiday destination and film location (part of Charlotte Grey was filmed there.) The centre of the town shut down whilst they filmed but we walked around before they started and tried to remember which shops/cafés were there before and which had been specifically set up for filming...like this Café Rouge!

Thus with film star dreams dashed we turned to a different film adventure. We were contacted by the film director Raul Gandotra who brought to our attention his Acadamy Awards shortlisted mini film 'The Road Home'. He thought it might be of interest to us as it dealt with expat themes. The film is about a 10-year old English boy who is sent to boarding school in the Himalayas by his parents. He is British, but of Indian heritage, and he struggles to accept that people may not see him the way that he sees himself.

There are themes that I identified with in the film being of mixed raced heritage myself. I was born and raised in London but my dad is Nigerian and my mum is from Yorkshire. Having been asked numerous times in my life 'Where are you from?' I know that people who ask are not looking for London as the answer. I am British and have found it mildly annoying in the past that because of the colour of my skin people expect me to be from somewhere else in the world. But I have never taken true offence to it and always been happy to tell people of my cultural background...

Things ain't what they used to be, baguettes

Hi Val
Here's a recent article from the NY Times Weekly that you may be able to get something from for TAG readers;

I will get two Bielfelders

I replied to Debbie  [earlier post about the death of Henny] that I want two new hens to be with Penny and that I wanted two like some Debbie has. It was when she mentioned that they lay big brown eggs I thought they were for us.
Hi Val
That sounds like a good plan. Our chicken who lays the big brown eggs is a Bielfelder. Our hen is too young to lay yet. I bought her young as she was cheaper than a point of lay bird, which would have cost 30 euros. I only paid 15 as she has to mature before we can enjoy her eggs. It's supposed to be a very good, reliable breed though, and she is very pretty. I've attached a couple of photos for you to look at, so you can look forward to happier times of choosing new chickens!
We bought ours from a local breeder who impressed us with the nice conditions he keeps his birds in, and the lovely variety of birds that he breeds. We discovered him at Caussade poulty market, then visited his premises to look at all the other varieties. I find it so addictive!
Love Debbie

Thought to have links to al Qaeda

Officers with France’s DCRI domestic intelligence agency on Tuesday arrested a Paris woman suspected of links to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
The 21-year-old woman known for her ties with radical Islamic militants came under investigation after she tried to make contact via the Internet with members of the Yemenite branch of al Qaeda.

A death at Mas del Sol

Poor Henny,  or was it Penny, is no more. I went to clean out the henhouse this morning and thought one hen was sleeping peacefully, she was but it was a sleep she will not awake from. I thought she was a bit floppy yesterday, so whatever malady ailed her I hope it does not affect the other hen. All a bit chaotic as I discovered her, Malc had gone to Villefranche to get parts for the computer affected by the storm. Walter and Renata had found a snake in their bedroom and needed snake catching implements. The Dutch neighbour up the road has lost all her phone connections and computer links with the storm so needed me to find the code to log on and use our computer. We have  men mixing the cement for the floor of the donkey hut and they did not want Bonny leaving footprints everywhere. All  in all I have had half an hour of chaos.
Sitting down now with a cup of tea I can reflect what a good two years Henny as had, total freedom wandering the grounds, croissants avec beurre from the renters, and good companionship from Penny
Rest in peace dear  Henny, your egg producing capabilities will be remembered with pleasure.
I wonder what you do with a dead hen? normally the fox takes them away.
Debbie says
Hi Val,
So sorry to hear your sad news about you hen. I know some people would laugh at us, but I love my chickens and find it really sad when any of them die. If you're thinking about company for your remaining hen (and they do prefer to live with other chickens rather by themselves) then Glynis told me that there's a specialist chicken fair that will be running for 3 days this month in Montauban, on the 4th, 5th and 6th October, where there will be lots of different breeds to choose from. I want to go but John has told me that at 16 chickens, we have enough!

The talk is all of Christmas cakes

It's that time of year again! Christmas cakes
I've got 4 maturing at the moment.
This is a gorgeous recipe and you can use any dried fruit that you like as long as the total weight is the same.
If you want it richer and darker swap golden syrup for black treacle

I'm off to San Francisco for some sight-seeing and shopping and will of course be loading up at Tesco
before I come back!

Cooking tips from Glynis

Lemons getting a bit dry? Never throw lemons away. Pop them in the freezer -
you can still zest them from frozen and if you leave them to defrost for 2 or 3 hours
you can use the juice - they will be mushy but still great tasting

Invest in an oven thermometer. You will be surprised how much temperatures can vary
and they are £2.99 at Lakeland at the moment

Munich Beer Festival comes to Mas del Sol

Walter and Renata our ex neighbours from Munich, are back for a few days holiday, looking out at their former home from our gite. Last night we were invited to a traditional Bavarian meal with lashings of beer; beer specially produced for the October Beer Festival. Malc seems to remember that it was very good! The beer is made by brewers in a special way and bottled as that year's Oktoberfest Festival beer.
Also on offer a variety of sausages, some with the entrée and then weisswurst, plump white boiled sausage for the main course, very delicious but filling. Being a three sausage person was an accolade Malc and Walter achieved, and we both managed the tuition on skinning them with style, it is all in the technique apparently, like eating spaghetti.
It is so interesting the different cuisines each nation has for the festivals which are celebrated. With something like an alcohol percentage in the beer of 6 percent one can see why the Munich beer festival goes with such a swing.

Check out your box tree

The box tree caterpillar and box tree moth, Diaphania perspectalis, is native to East Asia but has been found in Europe throughout the last 7 years.
Your first indication of an infestation is likely to be the discovery of white webbing on your Buxus plants, and the discovery of the caterpillars, which are a greenish/yellow colour. If you’re unlucky enough to not find these in time, your next indication will be a severe defoliation of your Buxus!
The moth, which has a wingspan of 4cm, usually has slightly iridescent white wings with a brown border, but wings can sometimes be completely brown.
Young caterpillars are greenish/yellow with a black head, while older ones, which grow up to 4 cm long, also have thick black stripes and thin white stripes all along their bodies.
They produce webbing in amongst the leaves and stems of their feeding area, and feed on the box leaves. They have a voracious appetite!
The caterpillars and eggs can be removed by hand. If you want to use an insecticide, then products containing pyrethrum will be the most effective.
There may be up to 2 or 3 generations of caterpillar a year and they’re most active from April to October. Eggs (which are pale yellow, flat, and measure 1 mm in diameter) are laid on the underside of the leaf, in a flat sheet, overlapping each other. They are hard to see at first, but become easier to find once they mature, as a black spot develops in each egg where the caterpillar’s head is growing. The species overwinters in amongst the webbing on the Buxus leaves. As autumn approaches, the caterpillars will be busy creating their winter habitat, so now is a good time to check your Buxus, before these pests complete their development, ready for wreaking havoc in the spring!
