I replied to Debbie [earlier post about the death of Henny] that I want two new hens to be with Penny and that I wanted two like some Debbie has. It was when she mentioned that they lay big brown eggs I thought they were for us.

That sounds like a good plan. Our chicken who lays the big brown eggs is a Bielfelder. Our hen is too young to lay yet. I bought her young as she was cheaper than a point of lay bird, which would have cost 30 euros. I only paid 15 as she has to mature before we can enjoy her eggs. It's supposed to be a very good, reliable breed though, and she is very pretty. I've attached a couple of photos for you to look at, so you can look forward to happier times of choosing new chickens!
We bought ours from a local breeder who impressed us with the nice conditions he keeps his birds in, and the lovely variety of birds that he breeds. We discovered him at Caussade poulty market, then visited his premises to look at all the other varieties. I find it so addictive!
