Another lovely couple of hours spent with our old neighbours who had a second home here for countless years before moving back to their principal home in Bavaria. They know of our interest in the refugees and they have been more deeply affected than most. Looking out of their window in the leafy suburbs of Munich they can see beyond the trees a large white bubble. This is now the heated home to 300 refugees. Their commune is one of 12,000 people and seven communes in the area all have giant inflatable tents to house 300 people.
They are quite concerned as thousands of refugees are surging through Austria and entering Bavaria. The German people so far have welcomed thousands and once refugees are registered which happens quickly they are then given living costs.
The couple are worried that the mainly young people will soon get bored but Germany is providing intensive language courses and schooling for the children.
Can you imagine this happening in the leafy suburbs of Henley on Thames!! or the suburbs of Toulouse? I dare not even mention the horrors of the camp at Calais.
Why can the Germans be so welcoming whilst the rest of Europe turns their back?
Surely it is time for other nations to pull their weight and why not many many more being accepted in to the wide open spaces of the USA?
