The ferry Jean Nicoli was due to leave Marseille yesterday morning when the crew detected an explosion seeming to come from the depths of the ship. As a precaution the passengers were evacuated and the quay cleared. Bomb clearance teams confirmed that the explosion was indeed an explosive device, but dating from the second world war. Marseille harbour was a major allied target and many mines were laid by the defenders and several explosions have occurred over the years. Passengers were able to continue their voyage on a replacement ferry.
