Reasonable question

One of our "family" members staying with us over the weekend commented that as Great Britain was so successful at the Rio Olympics how was it that England is rubbish at football. We tried to explain that at the Olympics England has no team as it would have to be Great Britain, but have no explanation as to why the England team would probably have been eliminated by Honduras had they been able to take part.
On a parochial point in the 1948 Olympics Great Britain was captained by George Hardwick - captain of Middlesbrough FC. Not a lot of people know that. Britain lost the bronze medal match to Yugoslavia. France apparently struggled to beat India - most of whose players eschewed boots - 2-1 before losing to England. The winners were Sweden, managed by an Englishman.
