A comment overheard when we left the recital of songs by Brahms, Berg and Vaughan Williams given at the Mairie of St Antonin last night (Monday 15th). Local baritone Geff Cryer accompanied by Genevieve Foccroulle treated a full house to a selection of songs many of which were emotionally moving, some of which reminded us of the beautiful world we live in - even if it is troubled.
The Brahms and Berg were sung in German, and the programme thoughtfully provided French and English translations; the Vaughan Williams "Songs of Travel" are settings of poems by Robert Louis Stevenson, reflecting that great writer's love of nature.
The room was ideal for Geff's baritone voice, at times soft and low, at times powerful and always melodic and Genevieve's accompaniment was sympathetic. The pianist also gave us a couple of popular pieces by Mozart and Satie to complete a "lovely interlude".
